Looking at the distinguished list of past recipients, I am truly humbled to be awarded the 2024
Award of Excellence. While I had always aspired to one day achieve this milestone, I didn’t
expect it, especially given the many deserving colleagues alongside me. I am deeply grateful to
those who supported my nomination, and to the SLGM and Brownlee for providing this
opportunity to further my professional development.
This award is not just mine—it's a reflection of the collective efforts of my entire team. Achievements like this are never accomplished alone. Every day, my team works tirelessly, and this recognition is a testament to the hard work we all put in. In a world where we are often met with challenges and negativity, this is a much-needed reminder that we are making a positive impact, helping to improve the lives of our community.
I will proudly display the amazing bronze buffalo statue as both a symbol of respect for those who helped me along the way, and as a constant reminder to myself to always strive to be better, both personally and professionally.

The Society through offering continuing education has facilitated and promoted Professionalism In Local Government Management.
Local Government Management has been a very rewarding career and continues to be my passion. I have had the privilege of working with so many talented individuals committed to advancing and building our local communities. I really share this award with all these dedicated individuals that I have had the opportunity to work with. I look forward to continued involvement in Local Government Management to advance communities.

I am humbled to receive the 2021 Society of Local Government Managers Award of Excellence. Receiving this award, especially with our Reeve, many of our staff and my wife in (surprise) attendance at the ceremony, was an amazing experience and one that I will cherish forever.
As you know a municipality’s success is only achieved through teamwork … elected officials and staff working in concert to provide exception public service and improve the well-being of their communities. During my 30 plus years in local government administration I have been blessed with amazing teams and being honoured with this award was only realized because of them. I am truly grateful for their support.

The beautiful bronze buffalo keepsake is proudly perched on my desk where it can be shared with all, and the continuing education cash award will be used for indigenous awareness training for myself and our staff.

I’d like to thank the Society of Local Government Managers and Brownlee LLP for being named the recipient of the 2020 SLGM Award of Excellence and bursary for continuing education. It was as humbling as it was exciting to hear the news of being chosen for the Award of Excellence.
Thank you to my peers, colleagues and friends who supported the nomination. I knew you appreciated all the coaching, mentoring, and training you and your staff received from me over the years even though at times it was gruelling for you. I enjoyed watching you all grow in skill sets, knowledge as well as confidence and especially delighted as you began to surpass the teacher. Your support in this is incredibly meaningful to me.
The bursary is being used to offset course and conference fees while I study to achieve the Registered Parliamentarian credential through the National Association of Parliamentarians.
Once again, thank you for this incredible honour.
2019 Award of Excellence Recipient

"The position of a Chief Administrative Officer is unique in a municipal organization. As is typical of those in this field much work is conducted behind the scenes – in near anonymity - to ensure that the functions of a municipal organization run smoothly – being recognized with an award for work that is typical of so many CAO’s across the province is humbling.
I would like to thank the people that I work with. There is not a single individual CAO in any municipality who could be awarded this award without benefiting from the incredible people that they are surrounded with at all levels of their municipal organization. Municipal administration is a team sport: we have to work together to accomplish our many goals. Anything that I have accomplished in the past 13 years as a CAO I give credit to the staff that I have worked with: they are professional in every regard.
Professional development is a hallmark of the Society of Local Government Managers: demonstrating lifelong learning and encouraging the development of new skills within our staff is one of the prime responsibilities of a CAO.
My thanks to Brownlee LLP and the Society for the award and for their continued support of professional development within the Society of Local Government Managers of Alberta.

Receiving the SLGM Award of Excellence was a pinnacle point in my career and would not have been possible without the support of my family, peers and colleagues. "I have found the whole experience to be very humbling as to me there is no greater honor than to be recognized by your peers for your work in your profession. I would like to thank the SLGM Board of Directors, members and Brownlee LLP for this great honor. I have been a CAO for 34 years and without a doubt this is the highlight of my career. This award provides a goal for everyone to strive for as they work through their careers in local government management. The SLGM has done an excellent job over the years of raising and promoting the image of our profession in Alberta as well as providing excellent educational and professional development opportunities. I am a firm believer in life long learning and it is built into my whole organization. Currently in my office my assistant is a CLGM and I have two others presently working on their NACLAA Level I courses. I look forward to putting my $3,000.00 award towards improving my skills in conflict resolution and mentoring. "As I mentioned when I went up to receive the award at the Society of Local Government Manager's banquet in Kananaskis, I have a great deal of respect for people who work in Local Government . Municipal employees work hard and sincerely care about the service they provide. Because of this regard, this award means a lot to me. I sincerely appreciate the sponsorship of the award by Brownlee LLP and the Society of Local government Managers. The award provides an opportunity for a high level training course/workshop that often is not available because of budgetary constraints.
One of the main areas of service that I provide to Leduc County is in the discipline of Human Resources. I will be using the $3000 award to further my skills in Human Resources. I am looking at a course at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario or possibly attending the American Human Resources Workshop/Conference in 2006. The President of the Human Resources Institute of Alberta suggested this workshop/conference as an terrific learning opportunity.

"To have been chosen by my peers to receive the CLGM Award of Excellence was definitely the highlight of my career. I believe that this was the one time in my life that I actually could not speak because of the surprise and overwhelming feelings that took place within me. I display my award in my Office where everyone can see it. I am just so proud of it. I would especially like to thank the CLGM and Brownlee LLP. The cash award was used to attend an intensive course on Financial Planning for Retirement which entailed a group theory and then a one on one Councilling direction. I also took a course on how to operate a small independent business."

"As an active practitioner in the field of local governance, lifelong learning has become a required necessity to succeed in this ever changing field. The dynamics of the profession are such that a successful CAO must be skilled in many areas of expertise ranging from general management skills in the areas of financial management, human relations skills, communications, legal issues, and so forth as well as being conversant with the issues surrounding issues such as road construction, water/sewer infrastructure etc. We all know it is a challenging and diverse career path.
The Society of Local Government Managers acknowledgement of members needs for continuing education and the subsequent establishment of the “Award of Excellence” is a great testament to the support our Society has for supporting members ongoing training and educational needs.
As a recipient of the inaugural “Award of Excellence” I can speak first hand as to the benefit this initiative has had on my own educational requirements. I have always been and continue to be a supporter of life long learning, and this award has helped me to continue on my quest for further education.
Shortly after receiving the award, I enrolled into Athabasca University into the Bachelor of Management Degree program. Although it is sometimes difficult to balance the interests of full time employment with family and university commitments, the rewards are truly worthy. The courses I have completed to date have be very beneficial to my career path, and I am most grateful to the Society and to Brownlee LLP for the establishment of the Award of Excellence which facilitated this new opportunity for me.
I would strongly encourage all my colleagues to continue on a path of life long learning, and to consider applying for the Award of Excellence to help facilitate your educational ambitions."
